Don’t know how to choose the right mattress? Here are some tips to help
you find a bed you may never want to get out of. Choosing a mattress can be a very tough job. This is because neither of the two types of mattresses is better than the other, thus the right mattress would have to mainly depend on personal preference. There are two types of mattresses, namely innerspring and foam. An innerspring mattress has coils that come in two types such as open coil and pocketed coil. Open coil is the most popular type while the pocketed coil is one in which the springs are each enclosed in fabric to prevent too much unnecessary movement. On the other hand, a foam mattress is, of course, made of foam. No matter how difficult choosing the right mattress may seem to many, still, making a good choice is not far behind.
When shopping for the right mattress, lie down on several differently priced and branded mattresses for about a few minutes and find out which one you like best. Comparison-shopping can be a tricky step here, since there is usually no similarity between the bed that you most particularly like and the other potential ones. Go for what you really like and stick to it. Other than that, there are also other things that you need to keep in mind when looking for the right mattress.
If you are looking for an innerspring mattress, you need to consider the coil’s thickness or gauge, since it can affect its firmness. A heavier gauge provides a stiffer suspension while a lighter one gives the bed a springier feel. The higher the gauge number, the less thicker the coil is. Do not be too concerned about the coil count, as many cheap mattresses usually have more coils. Ask your dealer about a mattress’s exact gauge number.
Moreover, innerspring mattresses are packed with a combination of natural or synthetic fibers, among which include cotton felt, horsehair, lamb’s wool, mohair and urethane foam. An innerspring mattress’s cushiness is due to its multiple layers, with which various kinds of foams and their placement affect the mattress’s feel and comfort.
Meanwhile, a foam mattress can either be natural or synthetic. Natural foam is made of latex rubber, which better conforms to the body because of its softer feel. The tiny holes in its material also allow air to run through it and keep the body cool. Synthetic foam, also known as memory foam mattress is made of different densities and qualities of urethane, one of which includes viscoelastic. Compared to natural foam, memory foam is stiffer, hot and can cause sweating in people, although some people may be comfortable on it.
Also, when buying a new mattress, consider investing in a box spring too. This supports the mattress and helps keep it in good condition. It also serves as a shock absorber and a supporter for you and your mattress. Moreover, keep in mind that a box spring also wears out just like a mattress, although not obviously. So when replacing a bed, make sure to replace it with a new box spring as well, otherwise you will not be able to get good support.
Box springs are available in coil box springs, grid box springs and platform foundations. Coil box springs all have hand tied coils to keep them from moving all at the same time. This is the most recommended type of box spring to use and is also less expensive as well. Grid box springs, also known as torsion bar foundations are made of geometrically configured metal and are usually very stiff while platform foundations are usually made of very cheap and less supportive materials such as corrugated cardboard, foam and wooden slats.
So choose the right mattress and lay on it. With the right mattress, you can snooze in utmost comfort and wake up to the best feeling there is, you may never want to get out of it.
